Kiambu County has rolled out a Ksh100 million bursary programme aimed at supporting needy students who are already in their second term of the academic year, offering relief to families struggling with school fees.
The disbursement marks the final tranche of the county’s education support allocation for the current financial year, reinforcing ongoing efforts to ensure that learners from vulnerable backgrounds remain in school without interruption.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi announced that the bursary kitty is designed to cushion parents and guardians facing financial constraints, especially at a time when many households are grappling with the rising cost of living.
According to the county government, the programme targets students in both secondary schools and other learning institutions who require financial assistance to continue with their education. The initiative forms part of broader county efforts to strengthen access to education and reduce dropout rates.
Wamatangi noted that each selected beneficiary will receive between Ksh5,000 and Ksh10,000 depending on their level of need and available allocation. In special cases, some learners will be awarded full scholarships to cover their education expenses.
He emphasized that the county government remains committed to ensuring that education remains accessible and equitable for all learners regardless of their economic background.
The governor further stated that the bursary distribution process will be conducted under strict guidelines to uphold fairness, transparency, and accountability. He assured residents that only deserving students will benefit from the programme.
Education stakeholders have in recent years consistently called for increased funding towards bursary schemes, noting that many students face challenges in clearing school fees on time, leading to disruptions in learning.
The county’s education support programme has been a key intervention in addressing these challenges, with thousands of learners benefiting annually from bursary allocations across various wards.
Officials indicated that the latest disbursement represents the final phase of the financial year’s bursary cycle, after earlier allocations were made to different categories of beneficiaries.
Parents and guardians across Kiambu have welcomed the initiative, noting that the financial support has played a critical role in keeping their children in school, particularly during difficult economic periods.
The county government has reiterated its commitment to expanding education support programmes in future budgets, with a focus on ensuring that no learner is left behind due to financial hardship.
As schools continue with the second term, the bursary is expected to ease pressure on households while supporting learners to focus on their studies and complete the academic year successfully.
