Wamatangi funds bodaboda groups in Gatundu North

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has stepped up efforts to empower youth and small-scale traders after overseeing the disbursement of funds to bodaboda operators in Gatundu North.

The funds were issued under the County Government’s Kazi Na Boda Programme, an initiative aimed at strengthening the economic capacity of motorcycle operators across Kiambu.

The event, held in Gatundu North, brought together hundreds of bodaboda riders from Chania, Githobokoni, Gituamba and Mang’u wards, marking a significant boost for the sector that plays a key role in transport and livelihoods within the county.

Speaking during the exercise, Governor Wamatangi said the programme is part of a broader strategy by his administration to uplift grassroots economic activities and support youth-led enterprises.

He noted that bodaboda operators remain central to the county’s economy, providing employment opportunities and essential transport services in both urban and rural areas.

The governor urged the beneficiaries to utilise the funds responsibly, encouraging them to channel the support into strengthening their savings and credit cooperative organisations (SACCOs) to ensure sustainable growth.

He emphasized the importance of financial discipline and collective responsibility among operators, noting that strong SACCO structures would help riders access more opportunities in the future.

During the event, the operators also showcased their talents in the creative arts, including singing performances that added a vibrant touch to the gathering and highlighted the diverse abilities within the bodaboda community.

The riders, in turn, pledged to make good use of the funds and grow their businesses, expressing optimism that the support would improve their financial stability and enhance their daily operations.

Leaders present at the event reiterated the county government’s commitment to supporting informal sector players, noting that targeted empowerment programmes such as Kazi Na Boda are key to reducing unemployment and improving household incomes.

The initiative is expected to benefit hundreds of riders in Gatundu North, with plans underway to extend similar support to other parts of Kiambu County in the coming months.

Governor Wamatangi reaffirmed that his administration will continue rolling out programmes aimed at empowering youth, women and small businesses, stressing that inclusive economic growth remains a top priority.

The Kazi Na Boda Programme is among several county initiatives designed to strengthen grassroots economies and create sustainable opportunities for residents across Kiambu.
