Kikuyu hosts Kiambu SGBV stakeholders forum

Kiambu County has stepped up efforts to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) through a multi-stakeholder forum aimed at strengthening response systems at the grassroots level.

The Directorate of Gender and Social Services, in collaboration with the State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action, convened a Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting in Kikuyu, bringing together key actors from Kabete and Kikuyu municipalities.

The meeting, led by Director of Gender and Social Services Mary Kirobi and Deputy Director Peter Ogallo, provided a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on persistent SGBV challenges affecting communities within the two municipalities.

Participants included representatives from government agencies, community-based organisations and other partners working in the gender and social protection space. The forum was supported by TISA Kenya.

During the discussions, stakeholders identified gaps in the current response mechanisms, including limited coordination among institutions, challenges in reporting cases and the need for stronger support systems for survivors.

Speakers emphasized the importance of a unified and coordinated approach in addressing SGBV, noting that collaboration between government agencies, local leaders and community organisations is key to achieving meaningful impact.

Director Mary Kirobi underscored the county’s commitment to tackling SGBV, stating that strengthening partnerships and improving service delivery systems remains a top priority for the department.

She noted that forums such as the Technical Working Group provide an opportunity to assess progress, share experiences and develop practical solutions tailored to the needs of local communities.

Deputy Director Peter Ogallo echoed these sentiments, highlighting the need for sustained engagement and awareness creation to address underlying social issues contributing to SGBV cases.

Participants also reaffirmed their commitment to implementing sustainable interventions, including improving reporting channels, enhancing community sensitisation and strengthening referral systems to ensure timely support for those affected.

The meeting comes at a time when counties are increasingly prioritising gender issues as part of broader development agendas, with Kiambu positioning itself to lead in coordinated and community-driven approaches.

Officials noted that continued collaboration between national and county governments, alongside development partners, will play a critical role in building safer communities and ensuring that cases of SGBV are addressed effectively.

The county government reiterated its commitment to protecting vulnerable groups and promoting gender equality through targeted programmes and partnerships aimed at long-term social change.
