Kikuyu Member of Parliament and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has dismissed speculation linking him to a possible bid for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat, stating firmly that he has no plans to contest for the position.
Speaking on Thursday, the lawmaker made it clear that his political focus remains on serving the people of Kikuyu, revealing that he intends to seek a fourth term as MP in the 2027 General Election.
Ichung’wah, known for his outspoken style, downplayed the rumours with a blunt statement, insisting that he has no interest in transitioning to county leadership.
“I would never run for the position of governor. The day you hear that I am vying for that seat, just know something is wrong,” he said.
The Majority Leader emphasised that his decision is driven by a commitment to complete the development agenda he has already initiated in Kikuyu Constituency. He noted that stepping away at this stage would amount to abandoning the residents who entrusted him with leadership.
In a further revelation, Ichung’wah disclosed that he had previously turned down an opportunity to join President William Ruto’s Cabinet despite being offered several key dockets, including Finance, Transport and Interior.
According to the MP, he declined the offer because he preferred to continue serving in Parliament, where he believes he can have a greater impact on national legislation and representation.
“I chose to remain in Parliament because I have a clear mandate from my people and a responsibility to deliver on what I promised them,” he said.
He added that Parliament requires strong voices to push legislative agendas, noting that his role as Majority Leader places him in a strategic position to influence national policy and support government programmes.
Ichung’wah also revealed that he has maintained communication with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, even after his impeachment.
He disclosed that Gachagua once reached out to him through a mutual contact over a personal matter, highlighting continued interactions among political leaders despite shifting alliances.
The remarks are likely to shape the political landscape in Kiambu County ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly amid ongoing speculation over potential gubernatorial contenders.
By reaffirming his commitment to Parliament, Ichung’wah has effectively narrowed the field in the Kiambu governor race while positioning himself to retain his influence at the national level.
