Woman’s body found in Roysambu trench

The body of a young woman was on Tuesday night discovered in a trench between Zimmerman and Githurai 44 areas in Roysambu, Nairobi, raising concerns over possible flooding-related deaths following ongoing heavy rains.

According to eyewitnesses, the body was spotted in a drainage trench late at night, with early observations suggesting the woman may have been swept away by fast-moving floodwaters. Her mobile phone was reportedly found intact inside her trouser pocket.

Residents who gathered at the scene expressed shock and concern, noting that the area has been experiencing heavy rainfall that has led to rising water levels and dangerous flooding in drainage systems.

Some witnesses indicated that the trench where the body was found often fills up quickly during intense rains, posing a serious risk to pedestrians and nearby residents. They believe the woman could have been caught in the floods and carried downstream before ending up at the location where she was discovered.

Authorities had not yet officially confirmed the cause of death by the time of publication, but investigations are expected to establish whether the incident was directly linked to flooding or other circumstances.

The incident comes amid increasing concern over the impact of heavy rains being experienced in several parts of Nairobi and its outskirts, including areas bordering Kiambu County such as Githurai.

Local leaders and residents have previously raised concerns over poor drainage infrastructure, particularly in densely populated areas, warning that blocked or overwhelmed drainage systems continue to expose lives to danger during rainy seasons.

Emergency response teams are expected to step up monitoring of flood-prone areas as the rains continue, with residents being urged to remain cautious, especially at night when visibility is low.

Authorities have also advised members of the public to avoid walking near open trenches, swollen drainage channels or flooded roads during heavy rains, as such areas can quickly become life-threatening.

The identity of the deceased had not been released by authorities by the time of reporting, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident highlights the growing risks associated with flooding in urban areas and underscores the urgent need for improved drainage systems and public safety awareness.
