Grassroots football in Kiambu County has received a major boost after over 200 local teams were awarded a Ksh 2.7 million sponsorship package aimed at strengthening participation in structured competitions and nurturing young talent across the region.
The funding, channelled through the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kiambu Branch, will primarily support team affiliation fees, a long-standing challenge that has prevented many community clubs from fully participating in county and regional leagues.
Speaking during the release of the funds, Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi said the initiative reflects the county’s commitment to empowering young people through sports and creating opportunities for talent development.
Wamatangi noted that football continues to play a key role in uniting communities and offering a pathway for youth empowerment, adding that the county government will continue investing in grassroots sporting structures.
“Football has the power to transform lives, unite communities and create opportunities for our young people,” he said. “As a county government, we remain committed to supporting grassroots talent and ensuring our youth have platforms to grow and achieve their dreams.”
The sponsorship is expected to directly benefit more than 200 teams affiliated with the FKF Kiambu Branch by easing financial pressures that have often forced some clubs to withdraw from competitions due to inability to meet annual registration and affiliation costs.
FKF Kiambu Branch leadership welcomed the move, describing it as a timely intervention that will revive local football activity and improve participation levels across the county.
Branch Chairman Danson Njuguna praised the county government for honouring its commitment, noting that the funds had been eagerly awaited by the football fraternity.
“On December 7, 2025, the Governor made a sponsorship commitment of Ksh 2.7 million, and in May this year the funds were finally disbursed,” he said. “We appreciate this support towards football development and other sporting initiatives within the county.”
Njuguna added that many grassroots teams continue to struggle with basic operational costs, especially affiliation fees, which has led to reduced participation in leagues despite the presence of strong local talent.
He assured stakeholders that the funds will be managed transparently to ensure maximum benefit to teams and the broader football development agenda in Kiambu.
The sponsorship is expected to increase the number of active teams in local competitions while strengthening talent identification and development structures at the grassroots level.
FKF Kiambu Branch remains one of the most active football regions in the country, with hundreds of teams participating in structured leagues aimed at nurturing future professional players.
The development comes at a time when football authorities across the country are intensifying efforts to expand grassroots programs, with youth participation in structured competitions continuing to grow steadily nationwide.
