Kiambu County has entered a new era of healthcare delivery following the launch of a telemedicine surgery programme that enables doctors to collaborate in real time with specialists from across the world during medical procedures.
The initiative, unveiled at Kiambu Level Five Hospital, introduces advanced digital technology into operating theatres through the installation of high-quality cameras and a specialised platform known as Proximie. The system allows surgeons and medical experts in different locations to observe, guide and support surgical procedures as they happen.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi witnessed the county’s first telemedicine-supported surgery at Kiambu Level Five Hospital, marking what county officials described as a significant milestone in the transformation of healthcare services.
During the launch, the governor observed a live caesarean section procedure from the county headquarters. The surgery was simultaneously viewed by teams of doctors at Thika Level Five Hospital and medical specialists based in the United Kingdom, demonstrating the system’s ability to connect healthcare professionals across continents.
Health experts say the technology will help bridge knowledge gaps by allowing doctors to learn directly from one another without the need for physical travel. It also provides an opportunity for specialists to offer guidance during complex procedures and improve overall patient outcomes.
The telemedicine platform further supports inter-hospital and inter-county collaboration by creating a digital environment where healthcare professionals can review surgeries, conduct audits and exchange medical expertise in real time.
According to county officials, the system is expected to enhance the quality of healthcare services by strengthening professional training and encouraging continuous learning among doctors and surgeons.
Governor Wamatangi described the launch as a major achievement for Kiambu’s health sector, noting that the county has been investing heavily in modern medical equipment, infrastructure and healthcare reforms aimed at improving service delivery.
He said embracing technology in healthcare is critical to ensuring residents receive quality treatment while enabling medical personnel to access global expertise without leaving their work stations.
The governor added that the county remains committed to transforming public healthcare facilities and ensuring patients benefit from modern innovations that improve diagnosis, treatment and surgical care.
Medical practitioners welcomed the development, saying the technology will help raise professional standards and create stronger links between local hospitals and international centres of excellence.
The launch of telemedicine surgeries places Kiambu among the counties embracing digital health solutions as Kenya continues to modernise its healthcare system and expand access to specialised medical services.
County officials believe the programme will contribute significantly to improving patient care while positioning Kiambu as a leader in healthcare innovation.
