Ting’ang’a students gain Parliament experience

Form Four students from HGM Ting’ang’a Secondary School have gained a rare opportunity to witness the country’s legislative process firsthand after visiting Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.

The students, accompanied by their teachers and several parents, were hosted by Kiambu Town MP Machua Waithaka during an educational tour aimed at exposing learners to the workings of the National Assembly and the role Parliament plays in governance.

During the visit, the students observed the afternoon parliamentary sitting from the Speaker’s Gallery, giving them a chance to follow debates and discussions by lawmakers in real time.

Speaking after the visit, Machua Waithaka said such educational tours are important in helping young people understand how national decisions are made and how laws are debated and passed.

He noted that exposing students to Parliament broadens their knowledge beyond the classroom and helps them appreciate the responsibilities of elected leaders and public institutions.

The MP said the experience also encourages civic awareness among learners by helping them understand their role as future citizens and leaders.

Educational visits to key national institutions have increasingly become an important learning tool for schools, allowing students to connect what they learn in class with real-life experiences.

For the Ting’ang’a students, the trip offered an opportunity to witness parliamentary proceedings, interact with leaders and gain a better understanding of governance structures in the country.

Teachers who accompanied the learners said such exposure motivates students by giving them a clearer picture of career opportunities in public service, law, leadership and governance.

The visit also highlighted the importance of civic education in preparing young people to actively participate in national development and democratic processes.

Machua expressed confidence that the lessons and insights gained during the visit will positively influence the students’ future ambitions and academic pursuits.

He said creating opportunities for young people to engage with national institutions is essential in nurturing informed, responsible and active citizens.

The educational tour comes as leaders continue to encourage initiatives that inspire learners, expand their horizons and equip them with practical knowledge beyond the school environment.

For the students of HGM Ting’ang’a Secondary School, the visit to Parliament provided a memorable learning experience and a closer look at how Kenya’s legislative arm operates.
