Cold weather, heavy rains forecast

Residents of Nairobi and several parts of the country have been advised to prepare for cold and wet weather conditions as heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in multiple regions over the coming days.

According to the Kenya Meteorological Services Authority (KMSA), weather conditions between June 5 and June 8 are likely to bring significant rainfall to parts of western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the Rift Valley, while Nairobi and Central Kenya are expected to experience cold temperatures accompanied by occasional showers.

The forecast indicates that at least 21 counties will receive heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms expected in some areas. Counties projected to experience the highest rainfall levels include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot.

Meteorologists say rainfall in these regions is likely to occur mainly during the afternoon and evening hours, often beginning with morning showers before intensifying later in the day. In some locations, the rains may continue into the night.

In Central Kenya, residents of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi should expect light rainfall and chilly conditions over the weekend.

The weather agency has particularly warned of very cold nights in Nairobi and parts of Central Kenya, where temperatures could fall to as low as 6 degrees Celsius. Residents have been encouraged to take precautions against the cold, especially children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory conditions.

Along the Coast, counties including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale are expected to receive occasional rainfall, while parts of North Eastern Kenya such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo may also experience scattered showers.

However, a different weather pattern is expected in the South Eastern Lowlands. Counties such as Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Kajiado are forecast to remain largely sunny and dry throughout the period.

The forecast also highlights sharp temperature variations across the country. While some parts of northwestern Kenya and the Coast could experience daytime temperatures of up to 37 degrees Celsius, western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin and sections of the Rift Valley are expected to record cooler daytime temperatures ranging between 11 and 12 degrees Celsius.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain alert, especially in regions likely to experience heavy downpours and thunderstorms, as changing weather conditions continue across the country.
