Kiambu County is mourning the death of former Theta Ward MCA Simon Kuria Karema, popularly known as Wakarema, whose passing has saddened leaders, residents and members of the political fraternity across the county.
According to preliminary reports, Wakarema died in India, where he had been admitted while undergoing treatment for cancer. Details surrounding his death remain limited, but news of his passing quickly spread across Kiambu, triggering an outpouring of grief and tributes from those who worked with him and knew him personally.
Wakarema was a familiar figure in Kiambu politics, having served as the elected Member of County Assembly for Theta Ward in Juja Sub-County between 2017 and 2022. He was elected on a Jubilee Party ticket during a period when the party enjoyed significant support across the Mt Kenya region.
During his tenure at the Kiambu County Assembly, he rose to become the Chief Whip, a position that placed him at the centre of legislative coordination and political leadership within the assembly. Colleagues who served alongside him remember him as a vocal leader who actively participated in county affairs and debates affecting residents.
His death marks the end of a political journey that saw him play a key role in representing the interests of Theta Ward residents while contributing to discussions on governance and development within Kiambu County.
Residents who interacted with him during his time in office have described him as an approachable leader who maintained close ties with the community. Many have expressed shock and sadness, especially given the long battle he reportedly fought against cancer before his death.
The news has also reignited conversations about the health challenges faced by many leaders and citizens who are forced to seek specialised treatment outside the country. While the focus remains on mourning the former MCA, many residents have taken to social media to share memories and messages of condolence to his family.
Political leaders from different parts of Kiambu are expected to continue paying tribute to the former ward representative in the coming days as funeral arrangements begin.
Wakarema leaves behind a legacy of public service through his role as Theta Ward MCA and his leadership at the Kiambu County Assembly. His contribution to local governance during his five-year tenure remains part of his political legacy.
His family, friends and supporters now begin the difficult process of coming to terms with the loss as Kiambu County mourns one of its former elected leaders. May his soul rest in peace.
