Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has called a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, to hear the impeachment case against Kericho Governor Eric Mutai.
In a gazette notice issued on Monday, August 18, Kingi said the Senate will also witness the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi, the newly nominated UDA Senator who replaces Gloria Orwoba. Orwoba was expelled from the party after allegedly flouting UDA regulations and skipping disciplinary hearings.
“I have today, through a gazette notice, invited Senators for a special sitting on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, to hear the charges against Honorable Eric Kipkoech Mutai, Governor of Kericho County,” Kingi stated.
He added: “Senators will also witness the swearing-in of Nominated Senator Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi of the UDA Party.”
The sitting will begin at 2:30 pm inside the Senate Chamber at Parliament Buildings. Kingi said lawmakers will first debate Mutai’s impeachment before adjourning until September 9, 2025.
The development follows the impeachment of Governor Mutai by all 33 Kericho MCAs on August 15. The ward representatives accused him of financial misconduct, including the questionable payment of KSh85 million to contractors for uncompleted projects.
Mutai, who has now been impeached twice, was also accused of misusing funds raised for victims of the Londiani road accident. He has denied the claims, terming them political witch-hunt.
Earlier, the High Court had temporarily halted the impeachment after petitioners challenged the legality of the process. Despite the intervention, the Senate is now set to decide Mutai’s political fate.
