Moses Kuria claims MPs pocketed Ksh100,000 each to oust Aden Duale in parliament

Former State House adviser Moses Kuria has reignited debate on corruption in Parliament, claiming that Members of Parliament were bribed to remove Aden Duale as Majority Leader in the 12th Parliament.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Kuria revealed that each legislator allegedly received Ksh100,000 from the administration of then-President Uhuru Kenyatta to push Duale out of the position. At the time, Kuria was an MP allied to the Tangatanga faction.

“In the 12th Parliament, we were given some money by the Uhuru Kenyatta regime to remove Aden Duale as Majority Leader. It is on Hansard that I waved the money I was given there. You cannot say it doesn’t happen,” Kuria said.

He added that the bribery claims were recorded in Parliament’s Hansard after he offered to return the money on the floor of the House. According to him, the bribes facilitated the replacement of Duale with Amos Kimunya.

Kuria first made the claim in 2021 during a BBC interview, where he revealed that MPs were “facilitated” to endorse Kimunya.

The revelations come days after President William Ruto condemned widespread reports of lawmakers demanding bribes to influence decisions in committees.

On Monday, Ruto warned that MPs and Senators involved in the vice would face arrest and prosecution. He issued the stern warning during a joint parliamentary group meeting bringing together Kenya Kwanza and ODM lawmakers.

His remarks triggered backlash in Parliament, with the National Assembly suspending all committee sittings on Tuesday in protest. Lawmakers accused the President of undermining parliamentary independence.
