The Sacco Societies Regulatory Authority (SASRA) has sounded an alarm over rogue SACCOs operating without valid licenses, warning Kenyans to be cautious before entrusting such organizations with their money.
In a public notice issued on Monday, August 25, the regulator urged members of the public to verify the licensing status of any SACCO through its official website, where the full list of licensed societies is published.
“Operating a SACCO without a valid license is unlawful. Members of the public are encouraged to verify the licensing status of any SACCO Society from the published list before undertaking any financial transactions,” SASRA said in its statement.
At the same time, the Authority directed all deposit-taking SACCOs to apply for their 2026 operating licenses, in line with the Sacco Societies Act, which requires renewal applications at least 90 days before the current license expires.
SASRA said the window for 2026 license applications opened on August 25 and will close on September 30, 2025. “Applications must be submitted in line with the guidance note and the license application checklist available on our website: sasra.go.ke,” the regulator stated.
The updated list of licensed deposit-taking SACCOs for 2026 will be published by January 3, 2026.
This directive follows a string of regulatory actions earlier this year, where SASRA revoked the licenses of two SACCOs for non-compliance after they failed to renew their permits and meet members’ obligations. In the same notice, the Authority confirmed that 177 SACCOs successfully renewed their licenses and remain authorized to operate.
