RUPHA raises alarm after suspended hospitals allegedly reinstated on SHA portal following system bug incident

The Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association of Kenya (RUPHA) has raised alarm over a suspected system glitch that reportedly reinstated suspended health facilities onto the Social Health Authority (SHA) portal.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the lobby claimed hospitals previously blacklisted over fraud investigations and compliance issues regained access in the past 24 hours due to a “system bug.”

RUPHA warned that such reinstatements risk exposing patients to unregulated services while undermining the ongoing fight against fraud in the health sector.

By press time, SHA had not issued an official response, with officials indicating they required more time to investigate the matter.

The fresh claims come as SHA continues to grapple with transition challenges from the defunct NHIF, including delayed payments, exaggerated billing, and concerns over service delivery.

Recently, Health CS Aden Duale disclosed that 728 non-compliant facilities had been shut down and over 300 downgraded in a wide-ranging crackdown on healthcare fraud. Investigations revealed worrying practices such as falsified medical records, phantom billing, and converting outpatient visits into inpatient admissions.
