Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has dismissed claims by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua that he will be the opposition’s presidential flagbearer in 2027.
Speaking during an interview with Radio Citizen on Monday, September 15, Natembeya said no candidate has been chosen and insisted the opposition would subject all aspirants to strict scrutiny before settling on one.
“We must agree as the opposition, and no one should beat his chest claiming that he is the flag bearer. I’m saying this because they are just cold facts,” Natembeya stated.
According to him, the opposition will weigh each aspirant’s popularity and financial muscle before deciding on a joint candidate. He stressed that the coalition’s priority is uniting against President William Ruto, whom he accused of failing to deliver on his promises.
“The aim of everyone in the opposition is removing the president from his seat, not because we don’t love him, but because most of his programs are adding to poverty in the country,” Natembeya argued.
On Sunday, September 14, during a church service, Gachagua maintained he would be on the ballot, vowing to restore state institutions and prioritise healthcare, housing, and education if elected.
“I am a candidate to be president of the Republic of Kenya. I am qualified, and I have support. I am looking for more support, and I will be on the ballot as a candidate for President,” Gachagua said.
The exchange highlights emerging cracks in the opposition camp as key figures jostle for the flagbearer slot ahead of the 2027 General Election.
