Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has firmly dismissed any possibility of being a running mate in the 2027 elections, declaring his focus is solely on a presidential bid.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Kalonzo said his candidacy would first be endorsed at the Wiper delegates’ conference scheduled for October 10, after which he expects backing from fellow opposition leaders.
“It’s now or never. If I don’t go for it now, I never will,” he said, ruling out any return to the deputy role that has defined much of his past political career.
The announcement sets the stage for a clash with other opposition figures eyeing the top seat, among them former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has insisted he is best placed to defeat President William Ruto in 2027.
Gachagua has issued conditions for any contender seeking Mt Kenya’s support, including written commitments, public barazas, and pledges to overturn unpopular taxes and reform key sectors. He warned he will mount his own bid if opposition unity falters.
The opposition coalition has already formed a technical committee to streamline its 2027 strategy, with reports indicating four names are under consideration as the race for flagbearer intensifies.
