Church leaders demand harsher penalties for Gender-Based Violence offenders as cases surge among Kenya’s youth

Church leaders from the African Christian Church and Schools (ACC&S) are calling for tougher penalties against perpetrators of gender-based violence (GBV), warning that lenient sentences are fueling a worrying rise in such crimes across the country.

Speaking during a youth-led anti-GBV awareness walk in Thika town, ACC&S Deputy Moderator Rev. Dr. Joseph Gichuhi expressed concern over the growing number of sexual violence cases targeting young people.

Rev. Gichuhi said many victims are youths who fall prey to exploitation either in school or while seeking employment, urging them to uphold integrity and reject immoral advances.

The walk, which started at the church along General Kago Road, aimed to sensitize residents on the need to speak out against abuse and protect victims.

ACC&S National Vice Chairperson Samuel Gachau said the initiative was prompted by the alarming increase in GBV cases nationwide. He emphasized that Thika, being home to many students and young professionals, needs stronger community action to foster safety, dignity, and respect.

The leaders further appealed to Kenyans to stand up for the rights of vulnerable groups and work together to build a just, secure society for all.
