The government has begun the process of acquiring land in several counties, including Kiambu and Machakos, to facilitate the construction and expansion of major water and road infrastructure projects.
In a notice issued by the National Land Commission (NLC), landowners in the affected areas have been directed to inspect acquisition plans and submit compensation claims.
In Kiambu County, the NLC announced an inquiry into parcels of land needed to complete the Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project. The acquisition, undertaken on behalf of the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA), involves land in the Chania and Mataara areas. The project aims to boost water supply to Nairobi, Thika, and Juja.
“Landowners along the project alignment are advised to inspect the plans at NLC offices and prepare relevant compensation documents,” the notice read.
In Machakos County, the government will acquire various parcels of land to facilitate the expansion of the Machakos Sanitation Project, also being implemented by AWWDA. The project seeks to enhance sewerage and wastewater management systems across the town.
Public hearings have been scheduled to allow affected residents to present compensation claims before the Commission.
In Kwale County, the NLC has also identified additional parcels of land for the construction of the Kwale–Kinango (B92) Road, a key project under the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA). The inquiry will cover several plots in the Dumbule area, with compensation hearings expected later this month.
The new road is expected to improve market accessibility and connect the region to major hubs, including the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone and Mombasa Port.
Meanwhile, in Kisumu County, the government plans to acquire land for the reconstruction of the Mamboleo–Miwani–Chemelil–Muhoroni–Kipsitet (B132) Road. The NLC, through KeNHA, said the road’s upgrade will ease the movement of goods and people between the sugar belt and Kisumu City, lowering transport costs and enhancing trade.
Affected landowners across all project areas have been directed to submit written claims to the NLC, including identification documents, proof of ownership, and bank details, to facilitate compensation.
