Protests rock Kirinyaga as residents rally behind Governor Waiguru following Gachagua’s alleged verbal attack

Kirinyaga County was thrown into turmoil on Monday, October 13, after residents staged demonstrations condemning former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over alleged verbal attacks on Governor Anne Waiguru.

The protesters, mostly women, poured into the streets of Kutus carrying placards with messages such as “Respect Women Leaders” and “The Choice Is Ours.” The demonstrators accused Gachagua of using divisive language meant to undermine the county boss and intimidate Mount Kenya leaders who hold differing political views.

The protest, which brought business to a temporary standstill, saw roads blocked and bonfires lit along the busy Kutus–Samson Road, causing heavy traffic snarl-ups and attracting a large police presence.

“He should know that Governor Waiguru was elected by the people. When he insults her, he insults us too,” one protester shouted.

Another protester added, “Those inciting Gachagua to attack Waiguru only want her seat. We are the ones who will decide who becomes the next governor.”

The tension stems from remarks Gachagua made during a church service at Ambassador of Christ Church in Mwea on Sunday, where he accused some Mount Kenya leaders of betraying the community by aligning with President William Ruto’s camp.

“Wherever I go in Mount Kenya, I will be calling out traitors by name so that people know them whether they are men or women,” Gachagua declared during the service.

He further alleged that Waiguru was plotting to form a new political outfit ahead of the 2027 General Election, claiming her silence on farmers’ issues particularly on the rice importation debate was evidence of political betrayal.

Gachagua’s statements have since sparked backlash, with leaders and residents accusing him of fanning division and disrespecting elected leaders.

The former DP’s allies have also faced growing hostility in the Mount Kenya region. Over the weekend, Mbeere South MP Nebart Muriuki was reportedly forced to flee after an angry crowd disrupted his address at Kiritiri market.

Meanwhile, political observers say the Kirinyaga protests highlight simmering tensions within Mount Kenya politics, as alliances shift and leaders jostle for influence ahead of 2027.
