Kiambu County steps up climate action as county inspects new soil and water conservation works in Gatundu North

Kiambu County has intensified its climate resilience push with the inspection of ongoing soil and water conservation projects in Gatundu North, where new community-driven interventions are taking shape under the FLLOCA program.

The County Climate Change Unit on Monday toured Kagwamba area in Chania Ward to assess progress on structures designed to combat soil erosion, improve water retention and restore degraded landscapes. The works are being implemented jointly by FLLOCA and the county government under the leadership of Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

Among the interventions are water-harvesting ponds, bench terraces and retention ditches structures engineered to slow down surface runoff, reduce flooding risks and stabilize soils on farmlands. Officials say these measures are critical for communities that have long struggled with water shortages and loss of fertile topsoil during heavy rains.

“This program is about empowering households to withstand the effects of climate change,” officials noted during the tour, adding that improved water availability will help nearby farms cope with prolonged dry spells.

The county believes that strengthening climate adaptation at community level is key to protecting livelihoods and enhancing food security.
