Flooding in Baringo South has submerged eight polling stations just days before Thursday’s by-election, forcing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to prepare alternative venues for voters in Ilchamus and Mukutani wards.
Schools traditionally used during past elections now sit underwater after Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria spilled over, flooding homes, hotels and entire compounds. In some areas, crocodiles and hippos now roam where long queues of voters once stood.
IEBC Commissioner Anne Nderitu confirmed the affected stations include Ngambo Primary, Salabani Primary, Sintaan Primary, Nosukuro Primary, Lesun Primary, Oldepe Osinya Primary, Lake Bogoria Secondary and Lake Baringo Secondary.
Despite the setback, IEBC says it has secured plans to ensure Thursday’s Senate by-election proceeds smoothly, with six candidates on the ballot.
