Ruiru TTI hostel project progresses steadily

Construction of modern student hostels at Ruiru Technical Training Institute (TTI) is steadily progressing, offering hope for hundreds of learners who have long struggled with accommodation challenges in Kiambu County.

The multi-million project, funded by the National Government under the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), began in November 2025 and is valued at approximately Ksh 230 million. Once complete, the seven-storey hostel complex will accommodate up to 800 students, significantly easing the current housing shortage at the institution.

For years, many students at Ruiru TTI have been forced to seek accommodation in surrounding areas, often far from campus, due to limited on-site housing. The new development is expected to address this challenge by providing safe, accessible, and modern living spaces within the institution.

During a recent inspection tour, Ruiru Member of Parliament Simon King’ara expressed satisfaction with the progress of the construction works, noting that the project is on track and being implemented to the required standards.

“This project is about more than infrastructure. It is about creating a supportive environment where students can focus on gaining practical skills without the burden of inadequate housing,” he said.

He further urged the contractor to maintain the current pace to ensure timely completion, emphasizing the importance of delivering the project within the stipulated timelines.

The hostel complex is designed to offer improved living standards, including proper sanitation facilities, enhanced security, and a conducive environment that supports both academic and personal development.

Education stakeholders have welcomed the project, noting that improved accommodation is key to attracting more students to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. They argue that better infrastructure will encourage enrolment and support the government’s agenda of equipping young people with practical, job-ready skills.

Ruiru TTI has witnessed a steady rise in student enrolment in recent years, reflecting growing interest in technical courses. However, the increase has placed pressure on existing facilities, particularly student housing.

Once completed, the hostel project is expected to not only improve student welfare but also contribute to the overall growth of the institution and the local economy.

The development stands as part of broader efforts to strengthen the TVET sector and create opportunities for young people through accessible and quality technical education.
