A somber mood has engulfed Kiandai Village, Mwerua Location, Ndia, Kirinyaga County, after two boys drowned in a local dam on Thursday evening.
The victims, 15-year-old Victor Mwangi and 10-year-old Ryan Njoroge, were part of a group of friends fishing and swimming when the tragedy occurred.
Witnesses reported advising the children to return home, but the boys continued to the dam. Local divers and police from Baricho Station have been leading search and recovery operations. Families and community members, including teachers, have expressed shock and grief over the incident.
Residents say the dam, created over a decade ago during murram extraction by the former county government, was initially fenced but later vandalized, leaving it unprotected.
Community leaders are calling for urgent measures to secure the dam and prevent further accidents.
