Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has criticised Registrar of Political Parties John Cox Lorionokou for approving former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s new political party, arguing the decision violates constitutional standards on leadership and integrity.
Sonko on Tuesday received a certificate of full registration for the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), paving the way for the former county boss to re-enter national politics ahead of the 2027 elections. But Cherargei says the approval is “illegal and unconstitutional”, insisting that impeached leaders should not be allowed to form or head political parties.
The senator argued that Sonko, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who were all removed from office through impeachment should be barred from party leadership despite constitutional provisions guaranteeing political freedom.
He accused the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) of undermining integrity standards by endorsing individuals who, he says, lack the legal standing to occupy leadership roles in registered political entities.
Cherargei further claimed the registrar’s actions contradict the spirit of Chapter Six of the Constitution and called for accountability, terming the approvals “a puzzle, illegal and a corruption of the highest order.”
Waititu currently leads the Farmers Party after taking over in early 2025, while Gachagua heads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), launched in May 2025. Sonko, through NEDP, is expected to set up nationwide structures before his formal installation as party leader in early 2026.
The ORPP has maintained that NEDP met all legal requirements under the Political Parties Act, and is now cleared to field candidates in any by-election across the country.
