Calls are intensifying for the government to step in and fully cover medical expenses for elderly persons and people living with disabilities, amid mounting economic pressure that has left many unable to afford basic healthcare.
Community advocates in Kiandutu, Thika, say the rising cost of living has made it impossible for vulnerable groups to pay for treatment, including the monthly Social Health Authority (SHA) contribution, as daily meals remain uncertain.
Eunice Mwangi, Director of Eden Center, said many elderly residents are examined at hospitals but sent home without medication due to lack of money. She noted that some are raising grandchildren or children with disabilities under extreme hardship.
During a medical outreach in Kiandutu, elderly residents decried inadequate support, saying survival now depends on well-wishers. They also called for the Ksh2,000 stipend to be increased to at least Ksh4,000.
