DCI arrests suspected recruiter luring Kenyans to Russian military

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested a 33-year-old suspect in Moyale over alleged involvement in recruiting Kenyans into the Russian military.

According to the DCI, the suspect targeted vulnerable individuals, luring them with promises of legitimate job opportunities in Europe before directing them to Russia. The suspect is believed to be part of a wider human trafficking network that exploits unsuspecting victims by offering fake employment, leaving them in dangerous and illegal roles abroad.

The suspect was taken to the DCI headquarters in Nairobi for questioning ahead of court arraignment. Authorities said investigations will continue, with multi-agency collaboration aimed at dismantling the entire syndicate.

The DCI urged the public to report suspicious recruiters via toll-free 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.

The arrest comes amid rising concern over Kenyans travelling to Russia through unverified channels, with embassies warning that doing so could limit access to government assistance if stranded. Both the Kenyan and Russian embassies have clarified that official channels are required for safe employment and citizenship support abroad.

This operation demonstrates the DCI’s commitment to safeguarding citizens and cracking down on human trafficking networks that exploit Kenyans under the guise of legitimate overseas work.
