In line with the committee mandate, Senator for Kiambu Karungo wa Thangwa, led the Senate Committee on Health, chaired by Senator J. Mandago, for a tour of Kiambu Level 5 Hospital to assess the effects of the doctors’ strike, as well as service delivery and the status of this important facility.
The committee inspected the Hospital’s wards, Procurement department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Casualty area and Maternity ward among others.
The Committee was quick to note that the drug storage has been automated, and was able to randomly confirm that what was in the store was clearly indicated in the computer inventory. The staffs were very dedicated and served the patients diligently. However, the hospital has not been able to dispose of its expired drugs since 2014.
The wards, both male and female, lacked water since the sinks were broken, among other things.
The standing committee also paid a courtesy call to the governor of Kiambu to apprise him of its findings. Governor Wamatangi now has 14 days to rectify the anomalies and the committee will table a detailed report on its findings to the Senate.
Among the present Senators present were Senator Mariam Omar, who deputize Chair Mandago In the Health Committee leadership, Senator Okong Mugeni and Kiambu Senator Karungo.
