Homa Bay Deputy Governor Oyugi Magwanga has resigned, bringing to an end months of tension between him and Governor Gladys Wanga.
Magwanga confirmed his resignation on Thursday, February 26, marking a dramatic shift in the county’s leadership barely a year after the two were elected together in the 2022 General Election. His exit follows a prolonged fallout that had played out publicly, with claims of sidelining and political disagreements dominating local politics.
The former deputy governor had previously accused the county administration of locking his office and excluding him from key decision-making processes. In February, he moved to court seeking orders to compel the reopening of his office, arguing that the closure rendered him unable to discharge his constitutional mandate.
“I have nowhere to sit to offer my services to the people of Homa Bay,” Magwanga said at the time, maintaining that operating from home was not practical for a deputy governor.
The rift is said to have deepened after Magwanga openly differed with the governor on political matters, including campaigning in the Kasipul parliamentary by-election against the candidate backed by the county leadership.
His resignation now sets the stage for political realignments in Homa Bay as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
