Kiambu police arrest suspect in drug crackdown

A nationwide multi-agency crackdown on illicit alcohol and drugs has recorded significant gains across several counties, with police making arrests and seizing large quantities of illegal substances, including a key operation in Kiambu County.

In Kiambu, officers on mobile patrol arrested one suspect found in possession of 24 rolls of cannabis sativa. Police also recovered three packets of rolling papers, a pair of scissors and a rolling flag, items believed to be used in packaging and distribution. The suspect is being processed ahead of further legal action as investigations continue into possible supply networks within the area.

The Kiambu arrest formed part of a wider coordinated operation targeting illicit brewing and narcotics distribution across the country, aimed at dismantling supply chains linked to substance abuse.

In Meru County, officers seized approximately 1,700 litres of illicit brew known locally as mugacha during an operation in Kaguma area, Gaitu East Location in Imenti Central Sub-County. One suspect was arrested and taken to Gaitu Police Station pending arraignment.

In Bungoma County, enforcement teams carried out multiple raids. In Chemogee Sub-location, one suspect was arrested with 20 litres of busaa. In a separate operation in Mayanya Vitunguu, conducted alongside National Government Administration Officers, seven suspects were arrested, with authorities recovering 6,430 litres of kangara and 62 litres of chang’aa.

Nyamira County also recorded arrests after a multi-agency team raided Miti Mbili Village, where two suspects were apprehended. Officers recovered 20 litres of a suspected chang’aa substance stored in a yellow jerrican during the operation.

In Murang’a County, officers from Kabati Police Station recovered 35 rolls of cannabis sativa. The suspect was arrested, processed, and charged, while the exhibits were secured for analysis by the Government Chemist.

In the Nairobi area, one suspect was arrested with 80 rolls of bhang, further highlighting the continued circulation of narcotics within urban centres.

Authorities say the coordinated operations reflect a sustained effort to disrupt illegal alcohol and drug networks that continue to pose serious health and security risks. Police have urged members of the public to support ongoing efforts by providing information to help curb the spread of illicit substances.

The latest crackdown underscores the growing focus on both rural and urban hotspots, with Kiambu County remaining a key surveillance area in the broader national strategy against drug trafficking and illegal brewing.
