Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over Alarming Rise in Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Cases in Thika

As the world marks the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), concerns are mounting over the alarming rise in GBV cases in the Thika region.

Gathering at Mama Ngina gardens various government agencies, healthcare providers, and community leaders highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address this pressing issue.

Dr. Peter Muchunu, Coordinator of Kiandutu Health Centre and Thika Sub-County Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, expressed deep concern over the increasing number of GBV cases linked to drug abuse and unemployment. He emphasized that the impact of GBV extends beyond physical harm, affecting individuals’ mental health and hindering their participation in society.

“Our health facility sees an average of 15 GBV cases monthly, but we believe this is just the tip of the iceberg,” Dr. Muchunu stated. “Many cases remain unreported due to fear, shame, and stigma.”

Dr. Susan Gitau, a Counseling Psychologist, stressed the importance of providing comprehensive support to GBV survivors, including medical care and psychological counseling. She highlighted the need to address the mental health needs of both women and men, emphasizing that GBV is not gender-specific.

To combat GBV, Dr. Gitau outlined six key strategies: prevention, accountability, survivor support, policy reform, male engagement, and community leadership. She emphasized the collective responsibility to create a society free from violence.

Thika West Deputy County Commissioner James Wanyoike underscored the critical role of local leadership and the legal system in protecting vulnerable individuals. He called for increased vigilance, especially during festive seasons when GBV cases often surge.

GBV survivors who shared their harrowing experiences urged for expanded access to psychosocial support, mental health services, and empowerment programs to aid their recovery.

As the world commemorates the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, Kenya reaffirms its commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. By addressing the root causes of GBV and providing comprehensive support to survivors, we can work towards a future free from violence.
