Meru Governor Rev. Mutuma M’Ethingia has opened talks with Food for Education in a move that could significantly strengthen early childhood nutrition across the county. The governor, accompanied by Council of Governors (COG) CEO Mary Mwiti, on Tuesday held a high-level consultative meeting to explore a partnership targeting PP1 and PP2 learners.
Under the proposal, Food for Education plans to construct 45 modern kitchens one in every ward to enable daily meal preparation and efficient distribution. The initiative is expected to create more than 1,500 jobs, boosting local economies while ensuring young learners receive consistent, nutritious meals.
The COG says county governments remain committed to expanding and strengthening school feeding programs to enhance learning outcomes, improve equity, and safeguard the wellbeing of Kenya’s youngest pupils. Officials noted that the initiative will help reduce absenteeism, improve classroom concentration and support vulnerable households facing food insecurity.
Governor Mutuma affirmed that Meru is prioritizing investment in early childhood development, calling the partnership a timely step toward ensuring every child starts school with dignity and equal opportunity.
