The Ministry of Health (MoH) has announced plans to implement comprehensive mental wellness programs for healthcare workers nationwide. This initiative follows the heartbreaking suicide of Dr. Desree Moraa, a 26-year-old medical intern at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital.
Dr. Moraa was found dead on the balcony of her apartment on Sunday night, a loss that has deeply affected the medical community and underscored the urgent need for greater mental health support among healthcare professionals.
In response, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa emphasized the importance of these new programs, stating, “We aim to provide robust support systems for healthcare workers across the country.” adding that “the mental wellness programs will be developed in partnership with county governments and will focus on creating a strong network of support for those in the healthcare sector”.
“Dr. Moraa’s passing is a stark reminder of the silent struggles that many, including healthcare professionals, often endure,” said CS Barasa.
Dr. Moraa had worked at Gatundu Level 5 Hospital for just four weeks after transferring from Nakuru Level 5 Hospital. She was last seen at the facility on Sunday after a 36-hour shift.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has also called for improved working conditions for healthcare workers, citing the immense pressure and poor conditions that contributed to Dr. Moraa’s death.
KMPDU Secretary-General Dr. Davji Atellah highlighted the systemic issues within the healthcare system that need to be addressed to prevent further tragedies. “The healthcare system has recently experienced significant disruptions after doctors went on strike demanding better working conditions, including comprehensive medical cover, cleared unpaid salaries, and improved interns’ pay,” he said.
