Senator Karungo Thang’wa demands legal review of Nairobi national government deal to protect county autonomy and public funds

Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has called for a fresh review of the cooperation agreement between Nairobi County and the National Government, insisting it must strictly adhere to constitutional and statutory requirements.

Speaking after Johnson Sakaja appeared before the Senate Committee on Devolution, the Kiambu Senator said members were in agreement that the framework requires re-examination to ensure full compliance with the law.

Karungo stressed that any cooperation arrangement must protect the autonomy and identity of Nairobi County while safeguarding the oversight authority of county assemblies. He further underscored the need to protect the integrity of county budgets and guarantee meaningful public participation in decision-making.

According to the senator, devolution can only succeed if partnerships between county and national governments strengthen governance structures rather than weaken them.

“Devolution must work within the law, and any partnership must strengthen, not weaken, county governance,” he maintained.

His remarks add fresh momentum to the debate surrounding the Nairobi cooperation deal, placing constitutional compliance and accountability at the centre of the discussion.
