Wamatangi hints at ditching UDA ticket

Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has sparked fresh political debate after hinting that he may not defend his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during the Kazi na Boda Programme in Kiambu Township, the governor said his political future would ultimately be determined by the people supporting him and not personal preference or party loyalty.

Wamatangi stated that he was not focused on chasing political parties ahead of the next election, insisting that residents of Kiambu would decide the political direction he takes.

“I am not going to court political parties. I will remain here in Kiambu and go to the party that you people want me to go to. I don’t elect myself; it is the people who elect me,” he said.

The remarks have now fueled speculation over Wamatangi’s future within the ruling UDA party, under which he won the Kiambu gubernatorial seat during the 2022 elections.

The governor, however, maintained that his main focus remains on delivering development projects across the county rather than engaging in early political campaigns.

According to Wamatangi, the work done during his term will be the biggest factor in determining whether Kiambu residents grant him another term in office.

“The only ticket to passing the vote is the work that we will have done,” he stated.

The latest remarks come at a time when political competition within Kiambu County continues to intensify ahead of the 2027 polls.

Wamatangi has recently found himself in political confrontation with Thika Town MP Alice Ng’ang’a, who has openly shown interest in the Kiambu gubernatorial seat.

Despite both leaders being associated with UDA, the relationship between the two has remained strained, with the MP previously accusing the county administration of poor leadership and underperformance.

Political analysts now believe Wamatangi’s latest statement could signal possible realignments within Kiambu politics as leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle.

The governor nevertheless insisted that the wishes of Kiambu residents will remain central in any political decision he makes going forward.

He said he will continue focusing on development programmes and service delivery while allowing wananchi to determine his future political path.

The comments are expected to further shape political conversations within Kiambu County, where early succession politics have already started taking centre stage nearly two years before the General Election.

As political temperatures gradually rise, attention now shifts to whether Wamatangi will remain in UDA or chart a different political course ahead of 2027.
