Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has stepped up support for farmers and students in Ngoliba Ward, Thika Constituency, after overseeing the distribution of farm inputs to more than 7,000 farmers while also issuing bursary cheques to beneficiaries in the area.
The exercise, held in Magogoni, saw farmers receive certified maize seeds, bean seeds, fertilizer, and avocado seedlings as part of the county government’s efforts to strengthen food production and improve household incomes.
Speaking during the event, Governor Wamatangi said agriculture remains one of the key pillars of Kiambu’s economy and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting farmers through subsidised and certified farm inputs.
He noted that the county government is focusing on empowering small-scale farmers to boost production, enhance food security, and create economic opportunities at the grassroots.
“Farmers are the backbone of our economy and we must continue investing in agriculture to improve livelihoods and ensure food security for our people,” Wamatangi said.
Residents who benefited from the programme welcomed the intervention, saying the rising cost of farm inputs has made farming increasingly difficult for many families. They expressed optimism that the support will help improve yields during the planting season.
Apart from agriculture, the governor also issued bursary cheques to students from vulnerable families in the ward, saying education support remains a major priority for the county government.
Wamatangi said many parents continue to struggle with school fees due to economic challenges, adding that bursary programmes are meant to ensure learners remain in school and complete their education without interruption.
Local leaders and residents who attended the event praised the county administration for combining support for both education and agriculture, describing the move as a direct investment in families and community development.
The distribution exercise is part of a wider county programme targeting farmers across Kiambu’s wards through agricultural support initiatives aimed at improving productivity and encouraging agribusiness.
The county has in recent months increased the distribution of seeds, fertilizers, and seedlings in different sub-counties as part of efforts to revive farming and strengthen food sustainability.
Wamatangi maintained that empowering farmers and supporting education are key to improving livelihoods and building stronger communities across Kiambu County.
