Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has announced plans to establish a specialised police unit to hunt down unqualified and unlicensed healthcare practitioners operating in Kenya.
The move follows the death of Amos Isoka, who succumbed to complications after an alleged botched tooth extraction at an illegal clinic in Kawangware.
Speaking on Sunday, Duale said the proposed unit will work closely with investigators to enforce compliance in the medical profession and ensure rogue practitioners face the law.
The unit will also monitor operations within the Social Health Authority (SHA) to curb fraudulent claims and siphoning of public funds.
The Ministry of Health confirmed it is working with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to probe the incident and apprehend all those responsible.
Duale further directed Kenyatta National Hospital to waive all medical bills incurred by the late Isoka during his treatment.
Investigations have since established that the clinic involved was operating illegally, with authorities warning that a nationwide crackdown is imminent.
