Githombokoni borehole project to boost water access

Efforts to improve access to clean and safe water in Kiambu County have received a boost following the launch of a new borehole project in Githombokoni Ward, Gatundu South Sub-county.

The initiative, being implemented by the county’s Department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources, Energy and Climate Change, targets residents living around the Gacege ECDE compound. Once completed, the borehole is expected to serve approximately 1,000 households, easing water shortages that have long affected the area.

For many residents in Githombokoni, access to reliable water sources has been a persistent challenge, with households often forced to travel long distances in search of clean water. During dry seasons, the situation becomes even more difficult, affecting daily routines and economic activities.

County officials say the project is part of a broader strategy to expand water infrastructure and ensure that more households have access to safe and sustainable water sources. The borehole will provide a dependable supply, reducing reliance on seasonal streams and other unreliable sources.

Governor Kimani Wamatangi has reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to improving water access, noting that the administration is prioritising projects that directly impact the livelihoods of residents.

He said the county will continue investing in water development programmes across all sub-counties to bridge existing gaps and promote equitable access. The goal, he added, is to ensure that every household in Kiambu can access clean drinking water without strain.

Beyond domestic use, the borehole is also expected to support institutions such as schools and small businesses within the area, contributing to improved hygiene, productivity, and overall quality of life.

Residents have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will bring lasting relief and reduce the burden of water scarcity. Many say the improved access will not only save time but also enhance health outcomes by providing safe drinking water.

As the county government rolls out similar projects in other parts of Kiambu, leaders maintain that water access remains a top priority in driving inclusive development and improving living standards.

The Githombokoni borehole project now stands as another step towards achieving sustainable water solutions for communities across the county.
