Edwin Sifuna ousted as ODM secretary general following NEC resolution over party discipline concerns

Edwin Sifuna has been removed as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the party’s senior leadership has confirmed.

The decision was reached during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Wednesday, February 11, where members resolved to remove the Nairobi Senator from office with immediate effect.

In a statement, the NEC cited rising cases of indiscipline within the party, particularly among senior leaders, and emphasised the need to uphold the party’s constitution and collective decision-making structures.

“The National Executive Council expressed concern over rising levels of indiscipline within the party, especially within senior leadership positions. ODM is governed by constitutional rule of law and collective decision-making through its duly constituted organs,” the statement read.

After deliberating on matters relating to Sifuna’s conduct, the NEC resolved to remove him from office.

Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo, who has been serving as Deputy Secretary General, will now take over and oversee the party’s Secretariat.

Omanyo assumes the role at a critical time as ODM prepares for its National Delegates Convention (NDC) scheduled for March 27, 2026.

Sifuna’s absence from the NEC meeting, alongside Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, had fuelled speculation about his position within the party.

Earlier, ODM Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga had warned that disciplinary action would be taken against leaders deemed to be acting contrary to party principles.

The NEC also resolved that Dr. Oburu Oginga will spearhead coalition negotiations on behalf of ODM as the party repositions itself ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The changes mark a significant shift in the party’s leadership structure as ODM moves to consolidate internal discipline and prepare for upcoming political realignments.
