The County Government of Kiambu has intensified efforts to empower women economically through agriculture, with hundreds of beneficiaries in Gitaru Ward receiving improved kienyeji chicks to boost poultry farming.
The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Kimani Wamatangi through the Department of Agriculture, is part of a broader programme aimed at supporting grassroots livelihoods and enhancing food security across the county.
During the distribution exercise in Gitaru Ward, Kabete Sub-County, women groups received the improved indigenous chicks as seed capital to enable them venture into poultry farming. The programme targets women at the community level, many of whom rely on small-scale farming as a source of income.
County officials noted that the improved kienyeji chicks are better suited for local conditions, with higher productivity compared to traditional breeds. Beneficiaries are expected to rear the birds for eggs and meat, creating both a source of food and a steady stream of income.
According to the county government, the programme has so far reached over 120,000 women across Kiambu, making it one of the largest agricultural empowerment initiatives in the region. The distribution is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen household incomes while promoting sustainable farming practices.
Women in Gitaru welcomed the initiative, saying it provides a practical opportunity to start or expand small poultry enterprises without the burden of high start-up costs. Many expressed optimism that the project will help them meet daily needs, pay school fees, and improve their overall living standards.
The county government has also indicated that beneficiaries will receive guidance on proper poultry management to ensure the success of the project. This includes training on feeding, disease control, and general farm management to maximise productivity.
Leaders say the programme is aligned with the county’s broader development agenda, which prioritises agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and job creation. By targeting women, the initiative seeks to uplift households and strengthen community resilience.
The distribution of improved kienyeji chicks is expected to continue in other wards, with more women set to benefit in the coming months. As the programme expands, it is anticipated to play a key role in improving food security and empowering women economically across Kiambu County.
