A six-kilometre road from Kimbo to Matangi in Ruiru constituency has been a long-standing problem for users despite efforts to tarmac it. Users of the road say that although it was constructed and tarmacked, it did not last for two years before deteriorating again. “We complained about how the road was being constructed, but our concerns were not heard. They used a manual method to apply the tar,” a resident complained.
The road users say they were shocked by how the road was handled after raising concerns about the worn-out tar. Instead of resurfacing the road, authorities are said to have brought machinery that removed the tar, after which the road was covered with hardcore stones and sand.
Residents and business operators say the road has been a thorn in the flesh, as they endure mud during the rainy season, while in the dry season, dust from the road negatively impacts their businesses. “During the rainy season, people spend hours travelling from Kimbo to Matangi because the road is inaccessible. Water overflows onto the road due to poor drainage,” a resident lamented. Road users also expressed struggles in driving, as they cannot see where the potholes are.
Residents of Theta in Matangi are now urging the government to expedite repairs on the road, as they face significant challenges connecting to other areas. “The road is hectic; people are struggling to travel. Women find it difficult to seek medical attention when they are in labor. We must be heard,” one resident expressed in frustration. Theta is located in Theta Ward, Ruiru Constituency.
