The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a probe into a devastating fire that broke out at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) in Juja early Tuesday morning.

Maxwell Njuguna, a resident of the hostel, recounted the terrifying experience. He told the media:“I heard shouts for help and saw thick smoke and flames emerging from the windows. The fire spread so fast, and it was terrifying to watch.”
Reports and videos circulating on social media show thick smoke and a large fireball rising from the windows, sparking panic among students and the Juja community.
The university’s clinical department confirmed that seven students sustained injuries as a result of the incident. Of these: Five students were admitted to JKUAT Hospital and Two others are receiving treatment at Thika Level 5 Hospital.
Acting Chief Corporate Communications Officer Patrick Munavi stated that most of the injured students sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged except for three, who remain under observation.
Munavi said:”It is unfortunate that such an incident occurred. A few students sustained minor injuries and have been treated in hospital and released. Only three are currently under observation in the university hospital.”
Following the incident, JKUAT has announced counseling services and alternative accommodation for the affected students. The institution emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of its students and staff by implementing enhanced security surveillance both on and around the campus.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and the DCI is leading the investigation to determine the origin of the blaze. Munavi reassured stakeholders that updates regarding the investigation would be shared as they become available.
“The safety and well-being of our students are paramount to us,” Munavi added, extending gratitude to the first responders, including JKUAT student fire marshals, Kiambu County firefighters, and the Juja community, for their swift action in containing the fire.
Despite the incident, JKUAT confirmed that all scheduled university activities and programs will continue as planned.
The university has promised to prioritize the safety of its students and stakeholders while efforts to support affected students are underway.
