Harambee Stars will face Zambia on Sunday in their final Group A match of the CHAN 2024 tournament, with a quarterfinal place already secured.
Kenya, making its debut in the competition, has exceeded expectations by leading the group with seven points from three games.
The Stars opened their campaign with a 1-0 win over DR Congo, drew 1-1 against Angola despite finishing with ten men, and edged Morocco 1-0 to book a historic spot in the last eight.
Head coach Benni McCarthy said his players are aiming higher.
“We’re already in the quarterfinals, but we are looking for that one crucial thing to top the group,” McCarthy told reporters on Saturday.
He added that Kenya’s strong run is proof of hard work, not luck.
“From the start, people called this the group of death and expected us to have zero points. Now we are top, and tomorrow is a must-win for us. We want to show it’s about dedication and determination.”
McCarthy also praised his squad’s fighting spirit.
“I always reward hard work. Whoever wants it the most in training, that’s who plays. Players earn their spots with effort,” he said.
Assistant captain Daniel Sakari echoed his coach, stressing consistency.
“We’ve shown we are a good team in the past three matches. To be great, we have to be consistently good, and that’s what we want to achieve,” Sakari said.
Victory against Zambia would see Kenya finish as Group A winners and remain in Nairobi for a quarterfinal tie at Kasarani, likely against Mauritania. A second-place finish would send them to Dar es Salaam to face hosts Tanzania.
Among the host nations, Kenya and Tanzania have already booked quarterfinal places, while Uganda will qualify if they defeat South Africa on Monday.

First of all I would like to say fantastic blog! I had a quick question in which I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind before writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or hints? Thanks!
