Family of slain lawyer Kyalo Mbobu demands justice during ongoing investigation

The family of Nairobi lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was shot dead in a brazen daylight attack on Magadi Road, is demanding swift justice as investigations into his killing intensify.

Speaking at their home in Makueni County on Wednesday, September 10, the family described Mbobu as the pillar of their household and a man who lived peacefully with all. His brother, lawyer James Maluki, urged the government to move with speed in uncovering the truth behind the murder.

“We are demanding justice over our loved one’s death. Mbobu had no issues with anyone and was a professional who conducted himself well. We do not know why someone would want him dead,” Maluki said.

Maluki further noted that the killing had sent shockwaves across the legal fraternity. “Everyone has freedom of movement and speech. This killing sends the wrong message to professionals, as it means they cannot conduct themselves without looking over their shoulders all the time,” he added.

According to preliminary reports, two armed men riding on a motorcycle accosted Mbobu’s vehicle during a traffic snarl-up on Magadi Road, firing five shots through his car window and killing him instantly.

Mbobu’s Final Hours

On the day of his death, Mbobu reported to his Nairobi CBD office at 5am before attending morning prayers at the Holy Family Basilica. Colleagues recalled that he appeared uncharacteristically quiet, noting a shift from his usual jovial mood.

Later in the evening, the advocate reportedly met with unidentified individuals at a city hotel before proceeding to another meeting within the CBD. He was heading home when he was ambushed.

LSK Outcry and DCI Investigation

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemned the murder, terming it a premeditated assassination that highlights the growing risks faced by legal practitioners.

“The Law Society of Kenya expresses profound grief and concern following the brutal gunning down of Mr. Kyalo Mbobu, a reputable Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a resounding three decades of practice. This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and the entire country,” said LSK President Faith Odhiambo.

Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed it had launched investigations, visiting the crime scene near the Galleria area and conducting forensic analysis on Mbobu’s vehicle. Detectives are pursuing leads as the hunt for the assailants continues.
