Detectives investigating the killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu have combed his Nairobi office for files and documents that could shed light on the motive behind his murder.

The operation came just hours before the prominent lawyer’s burial in Mua, Machakos County, following a memorial service at St John’s Catholic Church in Karen.

The homicide unit confirmed that investigators spent hours scrutinizing records at the office alongside his staff. Over 15 people, including colleagues, employees, boda boda riders, and bank clients linked to Mbobu, have already been questioned.

Authorities are also probing whether any of his financial dealings may be tied to the fatal attack.

Mbobu, a former chair of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal, was shot dead on September 9 in a drive-by shooting along Magadi Road. He sustained eight gunshot wounds to the chest and neck, leaving him with fatal spinal injuries.

The attackers, a gunman and a motorcycle rider, escaped after firing shots into the air to scare onlookers. The lack of CCTV cameras along Magadi and Lang’ata roads has slowed progress, though detectives are reviewing alternative surveillance footage.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said investigators are exploring whether the killing was linked to Mbobu’s professional work. “Because he is a lawyer, of course, the first thing that comes to mind is whether someone was exerting revenge or attacking him by virtue of his professional duties,” Murkomen noted.

Three suspects earlier arrested as persons of interest have since been released, while the murder weapon remains missing.

Investigators are analyzing Mbobu’s final hours, from morning prayers at Holy Family Basilica to a lunch at Sagret Hotel, and his last moments leaving the office at 5:09 pm before he was gunned down.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, has directed police to fast-track the probe and provide a detailed report within seven days. He also appealed to the public to share any information that could help bring the killers to justice.
