MPs sing Raila Odinga’s favorite song in emotional tribute as Parliament pays last respects ahead of State Funeral

An emotional atmosphere engulfed Parliament Buildings on Friday morning, October 17, as Members of Parliament led mourners in an impassioned musical tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Led by Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, lawmakers broke into Raila’s favorite song, “Jamaican Farewell,” as top leaders including President William Ruto lined up to pay their final respects. The moment, filled with both sorrow and celebration, captured the unity and admiration Raila commanded across Kenya’s political spectrum.

“Down the way where the nights are gay and the sun shines daily on the mountain top…” the MPs sang softly the same lyrics Raila often hummed during interviews and public events. The melody drew tears from mourners, including Raila’s children, Winnie and Raila Jr., who stood in solemn silence as their father’s body lay in state inside the chambers.

The “Jamaican Farewell” ballad, made famous by Don Williams, resonated deeply with the life and journey of Raila Odinga a leader whose story intertwined struggle, resilience, and an unyielding hope for a better Kenya.

As the emotional tribute unfolded, the National Funeral Committee confirmed that Raila Odinga will be honored with a full State Funeral one of the country’s highest recognitions. A State Funeral in Kenya is an extraordinary honor, typically reserved for leaders who have made significant contributions to the nation’s history, unity, and democracy. While historically reserved for sitting or former presidents, figures such as Michael Wamalwa and Wangari Maathai have also received similar recognition.
