Murang’a County has earned national recognition after Governor Dr Irungu Kang’ata received the County and Towns Excellence Award 2025 for the success of his administration’s Smart City Program, a transformative initiative reshaping infrastructure and governance across the county.
The award was presented during the Smart Cities Forum 2025, organized by the Town and County Planners Association of Kenya and the Nation Media Group, which brought together planners, policymakers, and innovators to discuss digital transformation, urban sustainability, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Governor Kang’ata hailed the recognition as proof of his administration’s commitment to inclusive and sustainable urban development.
“Through the Smart City Program, we have rolled out projects that have made our rural towns more accessible and liveable. From tarmacked roads and solar lighting to modern drainage systems and beautification of markets, we are transforming Murang’a into a model of modern urban planning,” said Dr Kang’ata.
The initiative has already uplifted small towns such as Kangari, Kiriaini, and Kanyenyaini, stimulating trade and improving livelihoods.
Beyond infrastructure, the program integrates technology and innovation into county service delivery. The county has digitized revenue collection, business licensing, and development approvals, enhancing transparency and efficiency.
“At the core of our digital transformation is the Geographical Information System (GIS), which maps all public assets from land and health facilities to water projects to guide future investments and reduce land disputes,” the Governor explained.
Murang’a has also prioritized environmental conservation by planting trees along major roads and introducing structured waste collection systems in towns.
Experts at the forum lauded Murang’a’s Smart City Program as a benchmark for sustainable, tech-driven urbanization, commending its balance between innovation, environmental stewardship, and citizen participation.
With its rising profile and visionary leadership, Murang’a continues to position itself as a trailblazer in Kenya’s journey toward smart, inclusive, and climate-conscious county development.
