Githunguri Member of Parliament Hon. Gathoni Wamuchomba has called for urgent action to strengthen Kenya’s food security policies, warning that the nation could face a food crisis if proactive measures are not implemented.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ breakfast meeting hosted by the Institute for Social Accountability (TISA), the MP said the country’s youthful population with an average age of 19.5 years faces a bleak future without proper planning around food rights and sustainable nutrition.
The meeting brought together key sector players, including Agriculture Committee Chairperson Hon. Dr. John Mutunga, Welt Hunger Hilfe Country Director Mr. Christian Schinnieper, and members of the Right to Food Coalition.
Wamuchomba expressed gratitude for the recognition of her school feeding programme in Githunguri, which has been praised for improving school attendance and child nutrition. She revealed plans to expand the initiative to include elderly residents, noting that many senior citizens struggle with food access and affordability.
“Food is not a privilege it is a right. Our laws and budgets must reflect that,” Wamuchomba stated, emphasizing her commitment to advancing legislation that guarantees every Kenyan’s right to adequate food.
The session concluded with a call for stronger collaboration between Parliament, civil society, and development partners to ensure food security remains a national priority.
