A man in Limuru lost his life after a landslide triggered by heavy rains. 40-year-old Benson Muriu was buried alive by collapsing soil in the Misri area of Limuru sub-county.
According to Area Chief Evans Kungu, heavy downpours throughout the day led to a loud bang as a large section of soil rolled down a hill, demolishing Muriu’s home. Neighbors and family members were awakened by rushing water and collapsing earth that engulfed the house.
Despite attempts by the community to dig through the debris and rush Muriu to the Limuru health center, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Chief Kungu expressed concern about the worsening situation in Misri, with many homes flooded and overflowing pit latrines posing health risks. He also reported damage to power lines, with Kenya Power taking the precaution of cutting electricity to prevent further accidents.
“Residents must be extremely cautious during this heavy rain season,” urged Chief Kungu. “Stay away from rushing water, power lines, and electrical cables.”
Local authorities are considering evacuating residents to the Kirathimo social hall in Limuru town. Nominated MCA Pacifica Ongecha, who visited the scene, highlighted the ongoing drainage problems in Limuru and other towns. She called for immediate action from the county government to clear clogged drainage systems.
“This is a multi-agency crisis,” stated Ongecha. “The national government, NGOs, and the county government must collaborate to save lives. We don’t have time for blame games, or we risk further loss of life.”
The heavy rains have also rendered underpasses along the Thika highway impassable.
