Economist Bonnie Mwangi declares Kiambu governor bid

Economist and governance advocate Bonnie Mwangi has officially declared his bid for the Kiambu gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, setting the stage for what is shaping up to be a highly competitive political contest.

Mwangi announced his candidature on Monday through a statement shared on his social media platforms, confirming that he will vie under the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) ticket. In his declaration, he positioned his campaign on a platform anchored on fiscal discipline, accountability, and efficient service delivery.

The aspiring governor, who holds an MBA and is a certified public accountant, expressed confidence in his ability to transform the county’s financial management. He noted that his leadership would prioritise prudent use of public resources while ensuring development projects directly benefit residents.

In his statement, Mwangi took issue with the current county administration, accusing it of mismanaging public funds and operating outside acceptable financial thresholds. He cited reports indicating that a significant portion of county revenue has been spent on salaries, at times exceeding the legal cap, leaving limited funds for development.

According to Mwangi, this trend has negatively impacted key sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education, which rely heavily on consistent funding. He argued that unless urgent reforms are implemented, the county risks falling behind in service delivery and economic growth.

To address these concerns, Mwangi pledged to cap the county wage bill at 25 per cent of total revenue if elected. He projected that such a move would unlock billions of shillings over time, which would then be redirected towards priority areas including roads, bursaries, and healthcare services.

He also outlined plans to significantly increase bursary allocations to support students from vulnerable backgrounds, noting that access to education remains a critical pillar for long-term development.

Mwangi further raised concerns over spending on non-essential activities, including foreign travel, which he said should be minimised in favour of investments that directly impact wananchi.

His entry into the race adds to a growing list of leaders eyeing the Kiambu top seat, currently held by Governor Kimani Wamatangi. Political analysts expect the 2027 contest to revolve around issues of governance, financial management, and delivery of key services.

As the race begins to take shape, Mwangi’s declaration signals the start of early campaigns, with candidates seeking to win over voters by presenting alternative visions for the county’s future.
