Limuru Member of Parliament John Kiragu Chege has officially overseen the handover of a construction site for a modern sanitation project at St John Bosco School in Bibirioni Ward, marking the beginning of a key infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving hygiene and learning conditions.
The project, funded fully through the Limuru National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), will involve the construction of a 12-door exhaustible toilet block. The facility will include a urinal section and a dedicated special needs unit designed to support learners with disabilities, with a particular focus on improving sanitation access for the boy child.
According to the project timelines, construction is expected to be completed within three months, with work set to commence immediately after the site handover. The contractor has already been instructed to begin mobilisation on site this week.
Speaking during the handover, MP Chege emphasized that the project forms part of a broader commitment to improving school infrastructure across Limuru constituency, especially in institutions that have long struggled with inadequate sanitation facilities.
He noted that the construction will also provide employment opportunities for local residents, as labour for the project will be sourced from the surrounding community, a move expected to inject income into households within Bibirioni Ward during the construction period.
“This is a community-driven project. We want to ensure that development not only improves learning conditions for our children but also benefits local residents through job creation,” he said.
The Limuru NG-CDF office stated that the facility has been designed to meet modern hygiene standards, including proper ventilation systems through exhaustible units, aimed at improving sanitation safety and reducing health risks among learners.
School administrators at St John Bosco welcomed the project, noting that the current sanitation facilities have been overstretched due to increasing enrolment, a challenge that has affected hygiene standards within the institution.
Parents and local leaders present at the site handover expressed optimism that the project will significantly improve the learning environment once completed, particularly for young learners who have been sharing limited facilities.
The initiative adds to a series of NG-CDF-funded developments currently being implemented across Limuru constituency, with a focus on education infrastructure, water access, and community facilities.
Once completed, the new toilet block is expected to serve hundreds of learners at St John Bosco School, addressing long-standing concerns over sanitation and promoting a healthier school environment.
